Formed by Oakland-born artists Gary Hunter (known as “G”), Mark Hunter (aka “Hunter”), and their leader, Rey T (short for Reynard Thomas), the group delivers a unique blend of R&B, Blues, and other genres. King, Albert King, and Bobby “Blue” Bland. Perhaps the most personal influence came from Rey T's close friendship with the one and only Michael Jackson, whose artistry left a lasting mark on him.
Their newest album, You Lied, showcases Special Request ft. Rey T's mastery of narrative-driven music. On the album’s title track, Rey T draws inspiration from a friend's painful breakup. “He told me the worst part was that she made him promise not to let anything come between them — and yet she was the one who called it off,” explains Rey T. The song captures the heartbreak and complexity of love with honesty and depth.Rey T not only leads the group but also writes, arranges, produces, and composes much of their material. The biggest challenge, he says, lies in telling a story in a clear, relatable way. “A lot of people can relate to this song or have a similar story, so the hard part is telling it right.” The message of the song emphasizes the importance of mutual commitment: “In a relationship, both parties have to play their part, but if the love isn’t real, it doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong.”
After wrapping up production on You Lied, the group is back in rehearsal, preparing to hit the road in early 2025.
