Noel Gourdin carries a legacy that extends beyond music. His given name, including his middle name Webster, was chosen in honor of his Great Uncle, a tribute to family roots that run deep in Mississippi. Raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, a city famed for producing legendary prizefighters like Marvin Hagler and Rocky Marciano,  has helped develop Gourdin. The ups and downs of the music industry have tested him time and again, but each setback has only strengthened him much like the champions from his hometown.

His sound is best described as soulful, but he envisions his music not to be limited to one specific genre. He prefers his work to be defined by feeling rather than labels, drawing inspiration from a broad spectrum of artists. His father played a crucial role in introducing him to soul legends such as Marvin Gaye, Johnny Taylor, Tyrone Davis, Solomon Burke, Jerry Butler, and Sam Cooke. However, his influences extend beyond soul, incorporating the energy and artistry of Van Morrison, Journey, Redbone, New Edition, Prince, and Michael Jackson. This eclectic mix has given him a diverse musical vocabulary, allowing him to craft songs that speak to a universal audience while maintaining a deeply personal touch.

With his latest album, Back to Basics, Gourdin aims to deliver a return to the essence of authentic music. The project features standout singles, including New Walk, New Talk and Might Let You Hit It, the latter featuring Kevin Ross. The creative journey of New Walk, New Talk is an intriguing story of adaptation and artistic instinct. Initially written by songwriter Marquis Green, the track was originally paired with a different beat, eventually leading to a creative shift. Gourdin, having already developed another track to the original beat, decided to pair New Walk, New Talk with a new instrumental from Lorenzo Johnson. Adjustments to the melody were necessary, but the change brought a fresh perspective to the song. This reversal of roles adds an interesting twist to the storytelling, challenging the control often associated with love and relationships. At the heart of New Walk, New Talk is a message that resonates deeply: no one is ever truly in control when it comes to matters of the heart. Gourdin’s ability to capture his artistry is a reflection of lived experiences.
