MC Lyte's New Music

IT'S always refreshing to hear more from the veritable Voice of Hip Hop, especially these days.  Whether she's supporting top awards shows with her signature sound or dropping fire bars on an album, MC LYTE's mic always sounds nice!

Her new album 1 of 1 touts just that fact - MC LYTE is in a class of her own. The album starts out with a wavy arpeggio and a rightful missive of gratitude to The Almighty.  The story-telling skills keep the ear staring at the lyrics in the track "Thank You".  This song could easily fit on secular or on anointed turntables, no doubt.  "Life of Luxury" has that hard-hitting but at the same time rollicking feel and features the lost art of R&B hooks and adlibbing. "King King" has all the makings of a wedding anthem in its paean to the men treating their partner right.  "To RockThe Mic" surprises with a nod to a familiar hook and MC LYTE's vocals deliver both the foundation and the icing of this one.  "Woman" has the authority himself Kane lending strength to an already strong offering.  "Change Your Ways" features MC LYTE's collabo Common and music divinity Stevie Wonder over easygoing songwriting without sacrificing the main message.  "1-5" is at minimum a threepeat-listen type of song - LYTE weaves her lyrical ability over a hard hitting bed, almost like it's her way to update the anthem 10 Crack Commandments, if you will. "Kick Back Relax" stands out with that Abstract beat and hook shuffling under LYTE's smoky rhymes.

1 of 1 closes out with "Music Is", where Muni Long teams up on hook duty in this stripped-down yet punch-packed bed.
