Jarrod Lawson honors Prince with soulful cover of I Would Die 4 U
You know you're doing something right when Michelle Obama name checks you. Our favorite First Lady hyped Lawson recently in Entertainment Weekly. Truthfully, Lawson is doing a lot right. Lawson played a key role in transforming Portland, Or. into a soul and R&B hotspot.
Now he has left the City of Roses for Music City. One thing that has remained constant has been Lawson's soulful baritone voice and the quality of the music that Lawson makes. His original stuff is first rate. Check out "Love Isn't Always Enough," from Lawson's 2020 album Be The Change.
Lawson also has a way with covers as evidenced by his acoustic remake of "The Ex Factor," his dive into the Isley Brothers catalog with "Footsteps in the Dark," and now his soulful cover of Prince's "I Would Die 4 U." Lawson has the gift that is necessary to be a compelling interpreter of the cover song. He can strike the balance between honoring the original material while adding his distinctive style.
