Hailing from Newark, New Jersey, often called "Brick City," Jay Don Dada’s upbringing shaped her identity and sound. Drawing from her Jamaican heritage, she chose the name “Don Dada,” a term that signifies a highly respected or influential person. She spent her formative years in the West Ward, or “Hooda,” near South Orange Avenue, before attending Newark Tech for high school. There, she honed her skills in music production while excelling as a member of a state championship-winning basketball team.
Although Jay Don Dada’s music primarily falls under hip hop, her creativity extends far beyond a single genre. Her catalog includes reggae, dancehall, melodic tunes, pop, and even traces of gospel and classical music, thanks to her piano training. She credits her broad musical foundation to a lifetime of listening, playing, and experiencing diverse sounds. Jay Don Dada’s influences span generations and genres, from Bob Marley and Popcaan to Lil Wayne, Young Thug, Blxst, and even jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald. While her inspirations are vast, her sound remains uniquely her own.
