Chantay Savage makes another disco hit hers on marvelous cover of Get Down Saturday Night
It could be that Chantay Savage possesses an old soul. Or maybe she has good memories of hearing funk and disco hits being played on her parents' stereo back in the day or perhaps she just knows how to take ownership of tunes from the classic songbook. Savage has a demonstrated ability in making an old song feel and sound new again.
She first made her magic in the 1990s when she transformed
"I Will Survive," disco queen Gloria Gaynor's lush and dramatic declaration female perseverance an independence into triumphant and empowering ballad that fused that New Jack style with hip-hop style with hip-hop and R&B production techniques in a track that served as many people’s introduction to the neo-soul music that would sweep the country,
Savage possessed the vocal chops to make the song her own, serving as session vocalist during the 1990s before breaking out on her own
Now, Savage has returned to the scene to put her unique and power packed take on another dance floor classic - this time Oliver Cheatham's 1983 funky dance classic "Get Down Saturday Night." Savage and renown producer Rob Derbyshire, also known as Full Flava, give a heartfelt and rendition of "Get Down Saturday Night" that hews close to its funky predecessor. However, Savage's soulful and fun vocal takes this track to another level.
Savage's version of "Get Down Saturday Night," is one of the tracks on what should prove to be one of the funkiest trips to the past that will be released this year. Full Flava has collaborated with a Savage and a group of talented voices who put their spin on funk, disco and R&B classics when the album Refreshed drops on Friday.
