Anisa demands respect on Deserve Me

Anisa, the British, Somali singer, songwriter and content creator, is a child of the 1990 and early 2000s. She grew up listening to the R&B of that era and the sound greatly influences her creativity. That can be heard in the fun single “Deserve Me.” The cut captures attitude of the women artists who were coming of age at that time and sought to make music that came from their point of view.

“Deserve Me” and the accompanying video tell the story of a young woman who knows her worth even if her ex-bae does not. The funny video finds Anisa sitting on her bed after being grounded by her mother. Friends call and let her know that the party is about to begin, her ex-boyfriend is there and so will she – regardless to what her mother says. Of course, Anisa shows up and gets visual confirmation that splitting from her ex was the best thing she’s done.

Anisa conceived, developed the concept and directed the video, and said everything came together when she heard the production, which has the feel of Destiny’s Child, late 1990s.

“It felt super nostalgic to me, and I really miss that old school sound. The inspiration for the song came from that ‘90s and early 2000s R&B era, which was very pivotal to me growing up, and has such a great influence on my music today! This song is about finally realising that you deserve better - it's almost like waking up from an epiphany and finally letting go! It's a song I created to teach girls to never settle for anything less than what you deserve, and that's on SELF RESPECT”.
