Alvin Garrett reminds us that "It Starts In the Heart."
Fresh off the heels of co-writing a Billboard Chart-Topping single, singer/songwriter Alvin Garrett releases his passionate and political song "It Starts With The Heart."
Released on the 56th Anniversary of the landmark Selma Bridge Crossing, the video of this special performance was the opening to the historic bridge crossing, and was filmed at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the site of the 1965 conflict that became known as Bloody Sunday. Garrett's vocals are an effective mix of Soul and Gospel, with equal parts D'Angelo and Deitrick Haddon. The arrangements effectively focuses on his vocal ability along with the plucking guitar and percussion to give a bit of a throwback vibe.
Lyrically, the song is going to provoke a lot of dialogue, as it references not only the challenges we have seen on the past, but what we continue to experience currently. Garrett asks questions such as "Where are we marching/Do we know where the road’s gonna end?/Who are we following/Are we further than where we began?Who are we watching/Are we sure that they’re really a friend?" With such uncertainty of the answers, he reminds us in the chorus that "It starts in the heart/That’s where the journey begins, it starts in the heart/ That’s where the pain will end."
"It Starts With The Heart" is not only a song to capture the ears, but a call to action that encompasses the spirit. We are thankful that Alvin Garrett, through his latest single, was able to contribute such important advice.
