Playa-D: Bringing Soulful Hip-Hop to Life
Hailing from the small yet iconic town of Port Arthur, Texas—a place known for birthing musical legends like U.G.K.—Playa-D is making waves in the world of hip-hop. Born Andre, but known to many as Dre, the artist decided to take his stage name a step further by shortening it to "D" and adding "Playa" to create Playa-D, a name that flows effortlessly and sticks in people’s minds. Port Arthur, with its tight-knit community of around 50,000 people, is a place surrounded by water and filled with heart. Playa-D speaks of the town’s ability to shape individuals who face adversity and rise to success despite limited resources. "Coming from this place with adversity and limited resources builds character," he reflects. With a strong "no-quit" attitude, Playa-D is a prime example of how belief in oneself can break barriers.
Musically, Playa-D has an eclectic range of influences. As a child, he was captivated by his father’s record collection, getting hooked on legends like Curtis Mayfield, The Isley Brothers, and Ohio Players. In the hip-hop realm, he draws inspiration from rap pioneers such as Ice Cube, Scarface, 2Pac, and Treach from Naughty by Nature. As for production, Curtis Mayfield, Dr. Dre, Easy Mo Bee, No Joe, and Ant Banks have left a lasting imprint on his creative process. Playa-D’s genre is a fusion of rap and hip-hop, but he brings something unique to the table by incorporating an R&B feel into many of his tracks. "I use heavy chords on some of the songs and bring in female and male vocalists to give it that soul feel," he explains. The combination of soulful hooks with the depth of his rap lyrics has proven to resonate with his audience. It’s a sound that is both gritty and smooth, connecting on multiple levels.
His latest album, Love 4 Da Game, displays his passion for music. "It’s self-explanatory because I love what I do," Playa-D says. From producing and engineering to writing hooks for vocalists, his dedication shines through every track. The lead single, My Pedigree, showcases his personal style and message. "I can't be anyone else but me," he explains, proud of his roots and identity. The track, much like the album itself, celebrates self-acceptance, individuality, and the blessings in life.Playa-D’s creative process is deeply personal and spiritual. Before hitting the studio, he lights a candle, meditates, and prays, centering himself and eliminating distractions. Once he finds a rhythm as he crafts each track, laying down melodies on the keyboard, sequencing drums on his MPC, and carefully programming each sound until it clicks. Of course, challenges arise, but Playa-D is adept at tuning out distractions, blocking out negative energy, and staying focused on his craft. With My Pedigree, Playa-D aims to convey a message of pride and authenticity. "It’s about being yourself, handling your business, and not trying to be anyone else," he says. The song is a celebration of self, family, and close friends who share the same mindset. For Playa-D, it's not just about the music—it’s about the soul and message behind it.
His most recent performance on September 28th at Jazz and Jokes in Beaumont, Texas, brought his album Love 4 Da Game to life on stage. Performing with a live band, Playa-D delivered an electrifying rendition of My Pedigree and another track, Looking Good. "There’s nothing like having a live band not only playing your music but actually loving the song," he enthuses. The vibe was fresh, soulful, and unforgettable, a testament to his commitment to blending live instrumentation with his signature hip-hop sound.
