Kill The Motherboard Releases New Album 'The Legend of Picasso Jones' (Stream)
On Friday (June 14), Kill The Motherboard released their full-length debut album, The Legend of Picasso Jones. The 17-track effort pulls from an expansive palette, blending elements of hip-hop, progressive R&B, new wave, and indie rock, and marks the culmination of an unlikely partnership between Milwaukee singer/songwriter Jon Brown and Grammy Award-winning producer, Jack Splash (Kendrick Lamar, CeeLo Green, Alicia Keys). The album features Bobby Drake, Ras & Taj Austin, and on four different tracks, Palm Beach, Florida rising star, Eric Biddines.
For Jon Brown, The Legend of Picasso Jones is a love letter to his home city. He freely expresses the dismay he has experienced, first as a child growing up in a neighborhood with a high homicide rate, and now as a first responder firefighter in the same city. The album ultimately carries a message of healing, however. In Jon Brown’s words, “I’ve been living in that neighborhood for almost 35 years so I saw what the effects of drugs and gun violence can do to a community. I thought instead of running from it, I would address the issue head-on. I wanted to shed light on what is going on, not only in my community but in communities across the country.” With the track and accompanying video for “Saint Paul,” Kill The Motherboard tells a tragic true story in the hopes of spurring social change.
Anticipation for The Legend of Picasso Jones has been building quickly--the album’s two singles and video have received support from Complex, HipHopDX, and Rolling Out, among others. Kill The Motherboard is the most recent in a long list of successful collaborations for Jack Splash, whose previous projects include Cool Uncle (a highly praised LP with R&B legend Bobby Caldwell), Semi Hendrix (a collaboration with LA hip-hop icon Ras Kass), St. Paul and The Broken Bones, and, most recently, Tank and the Bangas (winner of NPR’s 2017 Tiny Desk Contest). Jack Splash has been nominated for ten Grammys and won three.
